Shared Concern method means operationalizing of three traditional values systems. Its pedagogical theme is learning values by doing instead of preaching or discussing. Humanity by doing. The Shared Concern method, SCm, is applied in dealing group bullying under the auspices of humanity. Instead of demonising the bullies, instead of "bullying the bullies" the SCm breaks the circle of violence by approaching cases of reported bullying as a conflict between the parties. The bully therapist takes the role of mediator. Most probably the parties are unequal but in individual talks with those who are involved shared concerns are elicited. The tiniest solutions that can be approved from both sides are reinforced and augmented. The parties are not brought together before there has emerged a probability of elaborating and confirming a constructive reconciliation expressed in a shared solution. Democracy by doing is operationalised by amalgamating the opinions and ideas of those who are involved in a way that a shared plan of action emerges. Courses in therapeutic mediation based on this principle begin by the participants’ being asked to write down their ideas on good mediation; the rest of the course consists of exercises applying these ideas in role-plays so that the mediator’s role gets skilful habits. In approaching bullying behind the backs of the teachers the school class of teenagers is asked for advice on the best methods for dealing with group bullying. The teacher discovers the ideas of democracy prevailing in the class; the Shared Concern method emerges as instrument for treatment of bullying. Mutual confidence arises between the teacher and the class. The teacher is asked to mediate in their conflicts inclusive bullying and the pupils give the names of "those who need help". The mediator starts immediately treatment of cases. After results obtained a rumour emerges amongst the students: this treatment follows our own principles of democracy and humanity. It contributes to a positive atmosphere in school and society. Peace by doing. In the late 1960’s
Anatol Pikas entered peace education maintaining the doctrine that peace
can be created only in co-operation with the other side in crises and conflicts.
That was said as a challenge to monologues of peace values that contained
everything from health care to women liberation but attacked deviating
interpretations of the same values. In the 1970’s he discovered that
there was a structural similarity in dynamics starting wars and starting
group bullying. Hence, among the best peace education activities
was to approach group bullying as mediation between parties and stress
the similarity of human thinking and feeling at various levels.
