Role-playing in Pskov in 8-11 February 2001: the mediator guides the summit meeting between the boss and the employees who probably have bullied her.
A summit meeting is, according to the SCm, not arranged before the mediator in separate individual talks with the parties has reached some probability that the summit meeting will have a constructive outcome. If at least one of the parties is a group, a preparatory group meeting is held before the parties meet each other in a summit meeting.
The actors of the principal roles are pointed out by the participants of the course.
A nice atmosphere facilitates the meeting. The mediator Eugene invites the suspected bully group and their boss (their alleged victim) to a (non alcoholic) drink. (4). . The therapist: "When we had a meeting with three of you I heard a lot of nice things you said about your boss. Can you remember what is was? ...One of the "bullies" (played by Olsja far left) says something favorable. The "bullied boss) played by Polina, far right) listens happily. (10)
But the (suspected) bully continues with a negative stuff. Here the mediator makes a beginner's mistake. He should have stopped her friendly and asked the others tell about their nice experiences in order to deepen the nice atmosphere. (12)
i (16)
Now the victim-boss starts with a defensive reaction without having heard that the others have some nice things to say too.The others, listening to her defense become defensive.
(18)
The mediator tries her to see the positive sides but the victim-boss does not buy it.(Instead of getting mixed himself too early the mediator could have returned to the agreement of the preparatory meeting asking the others to say positive things. ("Well, there are other views ...")
The reply from the victim-boss is assertive (20) The mediator makes again an own approach.Because of his enthusiasm and and the rather positive inclination in the group a co-operative spirit is introduced (21)
Now the same bully as before makes a proposition that carries elements of shared solution. The mediator is watching the victim-bosse's reactions. (24) An other former bully /played by Jelena) confirms the positive parts of the previous approach.(25)
After 7 minutes of arguing within the group the mediator summarizes a common constructive solution. (30). An other 7 minutes' arguing follows. However, the positive contributions start to dominate and the result is an agreement confirmed with a common toast. (31)One issue remains before the meeting is closed. The mediator has to ask: "What to do if some of the parties does not follow the agreement?" Sooner or later they arrive at the conclusion that at big offenses new mediations session should take place but at smaller offenses "tolerance" should be employed.
The performance of the mediator was good but his success was dependent on the "bullies" being rather nice people. If he gets more time to prepare the procedure with an incresed know-how in eliciting positive contributions from all in the beginning he will make great success.
